Can You Serve Backhand in Pickleball?

A backhand serve is any legal serve struck with the back of the paddle hand facing the target, and the rulebook treats it exactly like a forehand.
What does the rulebook actually say?
It names the backhand specifically, which few players realize. Rule 7.C.4 of the 2026 rulebook reads: “The serve can be made with a forehand or backhand motion.” Handedness and stroke style appear nowhere else in the serving section. The rules regulate the motion, never the side of the body.
For a volley serve, three requirements apply at contact under the 2026 rulebook:
- The paddle must be moving in a clear upward arc (7.C.1)
- The highest point of the paddle head must not be above the wrist (7.C.2)
- Contact must be below the waist (7.C.3)
Meet those three and your serve is legal, backhand or not.
Does the drop serve change anything?

Why would anyone serve backhand?

The honest trade-off is power. Most players generate less pace on a backhand serve, so it works best as a change-up rather than a full-time serve. Throw it in a few times a game to break a returner’s rhythm.
What about spin on a backhand serve?
Spin from the paddle is legal, spin before contact is not. Rule 7.B.2 of the 2026 rulebook bans manipulating the ball to add spin during the release, but states plainly that spin may be applied by the paddle at contact. Brushing across the ball with a backhand motion is fine.
