What Is UTR-P and How Does It Compare to DUPR?

Quick Answer: UTR-P is the pickleball rating from UTR Sports, the company behind the tennis UTR. It rates players from 1.0 to 10.0, keeps verified and unverified results separate, is free, and is the rating USA Pickleball adopted after its April 2024 partnership with UTR Sports. DUPR rates players from 2.000 to 8.000, counts self-logged recreational matches alongside club and tournament play, is also free, and is the system more recreational players and club leagues already use. Neither converts cleanly to the other.

For a few years “your rating” in pickleball meant your DUPR. That is still mostly true at the club level, but a second system now sits alongside it, and if you play sanctioned tournaments you will run into it. Here is what UTR-P is, how it differs from DUPR, and which one you need.

What Is UTR-P?

UTR-P is the pickleball version of the Universal Tennis Rating. UTR Sports describes the scale as running from 1.0 to 10.0, “beginner to expert/pro,” with new players starting on a provisional rating of P1 through P5 and moving to a projected number after one match and a reliable one after seven verified matches.

Two features define it. Singles and doubles are rated separately, and so are verified and unverified results. Verified matches are the ones played in events organized under UTR Sports’ rules and reported by a third party; unverified matches are the ones players log themselves. Only verified results count toward a player’s Verified UTR-P, which carries a checkmark badge. The rating updates every 24 hours.

UTR Sports says UTR-P “is free for players and unlike other rating systems, UTR Sports has no plans to ever charge for their ratings.”

Why Does UTR-P Matter Now?

Because USA Pickleball picked it. On April 17, 2024, USA Pickleball announced a partnership with UTR Sports as its technology, software, and ratings partner, and said its older UTPR rating was “not expected to be used in the future.” UTR-P is also the rating used by the APP Tour. If you enter sanctioned events, your UTR-P is the number the bracket is built on. The guide to how to sign up for a pickleball tournament covers what entry asks for.

What Is DUPR, Briefly?

DUPR rates every player on one 2.000 to 8.000 scale regardless of age or gender, with separate singles and doubles ratings. It counts club and tournament results and also recreational matches players log themselves, with the caveat in DUPR’s own words that “club and tournament matches carry more weight than recreational ones.” Creating an account and logging matches is free; a premium tier adds analytics. The full explanation is in what a DUPR rating is and how to get a DUPR rating.

How Do the Two Systems Differ?

The scale. UTR-P runs 1.0 to 10.0. DUPR runs 2.000 to 8.000. A 4.5 on one is not a 4.5 on the other, and neither company publishes an official conversion. Treat any online converter as a rough guess.

What counts. DUPR folds recreational, club, and tournament results into one rating, weighted differently. UTR-P keeps verified results in one rating and self-logged results in another, so a player’s headline Verified UTR-P is built only from organized play.

Where each one is used. DUPR is the default at most clubs and in most recreational leagues, and more of your opponents already have one. UTR-P is the rating of USA Pickleball sanctioned events and the APP Tour.

How fast it means something. UTR Sports calls a rating reliable after seven verified matches. The Dink’s guide to DUPR puts the mark at 10 to 15 logged matches, with a provisional number showing after a few.

Cost. Both are free to join and to get a rating. DUPR sells an optional premium tier; UTR Sports says it will not charge for the rating itself.

Which One Should You Use?

The one your games run on.

If you play club leagues and recreational round robins, that is almost certainly DUPR, and it is where your number will build fastest because your opponents already have ratings.

If you play USA Pickleball sanctioned tournaments or follow the APP Tour, you need a UTR-P, because that is the bracket system.

If you do both, keep both. They do not sync, and nothing is lost by having two numbers that describe the same game from two angles. Players who have neither and only play open play do not need either one yet; the guide to whether you need a rating to play pickleball covers when that changes.

How Do the Numbers Relate to USA Pickleball Skill Levels?

Loosely. USA Pickleball’s skill levels (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and so on) are descriptions of what a player can do, meant for self-rating; the guide to pickleball skill levels covers them. DUPR and UTR-P are numbers built from results. A self-rated 3.5 will often land somewhere in the mid-3s on DUPR, but the two were not designed to match, and a DUPR or UTR-P number is a more honest answer to “how good am I” than any self-rating. The guide to how to self-rate your skill level explains why.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UTR-P the same as UTPR? No. UTPR was USA Pickleball’s older tournament rating. USA Pickleball said in its April 2024 announcement that UTPR was not expected to be used in the future, and UTR-P, from UTR Sports, replaced it.

Is UTR-P free? Yes. UTR Sports says the UTR-P rating is free and that it has no plans to charge for it.

Can I convert my DUPR to a UTR-P? Not officially. The scales are different (2.000 to 8.000 versus 1.0 to 10.0) and neither company publishes a conversion. Third-party converters exist, but treat them as rough estimates.

Do recreational games count toward UTR-P? They count toward your unverified rating. Only results from organized play reported by a third party count toward the Verified UTR-P that carries the checkmark.

Which rating do most clubs use? DUPR, at the moment. UTR-P is the rating of USA Pickleball sanctioned play and the APP Tour. Ask your club or league which one they run on before you set up an account.
