OC Sports and Wellness is a sports medicine practice in Foothill Ranch, California, that publishes pickleball injury guidance, including a practice-authored article on staying active in pickleball and recovering from injury with a six-step return-to-play pathway. Led by Sam Sunshine, MD, the practice describes its focus as integrative sports medicine. Per the article, care can include injury evaluation, rest or modified activity, targeted strengthening and mobility guidance, joint friendly conditioning, gradual return to play, and regenerative injection options such as platelet-rich plasma and Prolozone for lingering tendon and joint issues. The office is in Foothill Ranch in Orange County.
Strange experience with this practice. First they wouldn’t respond to my online form inquiry- fine, so I call. They tell me Dr sunshine is on holiday and that they’ll take my medical records and forward them to him to determine if I’d be a good patient. I give my complete medical information and a few days later I get a call saying Dr sunshine has accepted me as a patient. Cool. Schedule a tentative intake appointment and was told to go online and pay the retainer fee. The practice seemed perfect for me as a lifelong high performance athlete trying to keep up my activity level as I age, so I was going to sign up for a year at a very reasonable rate. After reading through the contract one thing was kind of worded with some ambiguity and I didn’t fully understand what it meant:“3. Fees… if this Agreement is terminated by either party before the end of an applicable monthly period, then the Practice shall seek only partial payment for the final month of service based on the number of days of membership provided to the patient and the itemized charges, set forth in Appendix 2, for services rendered to Patient up to the date of termination.”Since I was planning to pay for 1 year upfront, I was curious if this meant my remaining fee would be prorated if I moved or something didn’t work out. Seemed like a reasonable question considering I hadn’t met the doctor yet. So I decided to call and ask what this meant. The receptionist said she would confirm with the doctor and get back to me.About an hour later I receive the following text: “Thank you for reaching out to our practice. After reviewing your needs, we believe we may not be the best fit for your care. We encourage you to seek a provider whose services and approach better align with your expectations. We wish you the best in finding appropriate care.”I called to ask what happened and the receptionist just repeated what was said in the text and provided no explanation.I’m pretty disappointed because I really liked his philosophy and thought my background as a pro athlete in retirement would have fit well with Dr Sunshine’s expertise. I’m still not clear why he kicked me out for asking that question.Fortunately I went to Hoag concierge down in Newport Beach and they seem to be providing me with great care so far, complete with exercise physiologists and even an onsite gym in the doctors office.Anyways I guess the moral is, if you want to be a patient at OC sports and wellness ask about the contract terms until you fork out the cash.
Dr. Sunshine is so knowledgeable and takes the time to really take care of the whole patient. The Doctor and team are simply the best, my family has never had such amazing medical care. I highly recommend you meet them and see for yourself the difference.
I was looking for a change in healthcare providers and by coincidence was referred to OC Sports and Wellness by three different people, in the course of about 30 days. I felt the stars were aligning and I should check it out. After the initial consultation and reading everything on the website, I cannot be more pleased that this is the perfect fit for my active lifestyle. In the initial consultation, Dr. Sunshine was more than patient, a good listener and asked all the pertinent questions . In just one week I've already seen extreme responsiveness and a proactive nature from the entire staff. I'm looking forward to getting my VO2 max testing done shortly.
I have been going to OC Sports and Wellness to see Dr. Sunshine for years. From all aspects, it's a great experience. That includes: 1) The technical side of the medical information being communicated to the patient 2) Taking care of the patient by doing great work and 3) The logistics of appointments, bills, insurance, etc. The team at OC Sports and Wellness does an absolutely fabulous job. Cameron is also great at what he does. All of my appointments have been taken in a timely manner (
I've had many primary care physicians over the years. Was with Kaiser for a while and when I left I found Dr. Sunshine with OC Sports and Wellness. He is the best doctor I've ever had by far. He takes time with me whenever I have anything going on. His staff is incredible. Sandy, his Office Manager is so helpful! She'll bend over backwards to help with anything you need. And they are a DPC, which allows you to get extra care, more time with the doctor, very quick response at any hour, and truly affordable and comprehensive care. Plus, Dr. Sunshine focuses on overall wellness. He isn't quick to prescribe a medication. Instead, he focuses on holistic health, nutrition, and wellness, focusing on the root of any issue, rather than masking issues with drugs. Absolutely outstanding care!
