Academy Sports + Outdoors is a national sporting goods chain, and this Sunset Valley store on Brodie Lane serves the south Austin area. For pickleball players, Academy is a budget-friendly gear stop: paddles, ball sets, paddle-and-ball bundles, court shoes, and athletic apparel sit alongside the chain’s full range of sporting and outdoor goods. It’s the kind of place to grab starter paddles for the family or a fresh sleeve of balls on the way to the courts rather than a specialty pro shop. The store is open long hours daily, 8 AM to 10 PM most days, and carries a 4.1 rating across more than 2,000 Google reviews. Online ordering with store pickup is available through academy.com.
I hate this store honestly.... the times i have gone in, have been disappointing. the issue is i feel like the next time i go will be better, and it just never is. prices are always way too much. quality of products and whether or not they are in stock is a crap shoot. at least all the times I have gone to this location. Long story short.... its never "fun" to go here and i always leave spending way more than i want. no matter the items.... a pair of socks for 30 dollars or semi decent pair of work boots that they marked up. I hate going here and have to stop convincing myself it will get better. the people that "work" in that store honestly need to find better employment.
DO NOT BUY SHOES/BOOTS HERE. Apparently they recently established a “All sales final” policy and if you wear the shoes you bought for one day and find them to be very uncomfortable- they are nonreturnable. Academy had a great return policy for years, and I wasn’t informed of this new totalitarian policy when I spent $180 on the only pair of waterproof work boots they had. Now, I’m stuck with an uncomfortable pair of shoes and still have to go buy a different pair at REI where there is ACTUALLY a 365 day return policy that they aren’t going to change without telling their customers.
Great location got my Spurs gear on Sunday, don't understand why they don't carry Texas Ranger gear instead of Astros. They carry Dallas Cowboys gear but no Texans gear. You should have a little gear of all Texas teams, understand you can't have alot but none was frustrating. Come on Academy.
Not ENOUGH registers open! 2 registers open with 20+ people in line. TERRIBLE. Come on! It's a busy Saturday.UPDATE: visited again on a busy Sunday and had no problems finding quality items and check out was SUPER fast. Appreciate you having an appropriate amount of registers open and customer support in place. Recommended.
Customer service manager hates his life. I walked in this morning 8:00 am. White male out of shape grabbed and twisted the payment machine violently while I was trying to type my pin. Ignored me when I greeted him and then said the machine didn’t want to accept my payment. Didn’t smile once just made it a terrible experience. I walked in for a pair of socks and didn’t get them. I will not be coming back.
