Description
Portland Tennis & Education, now known as the Social Impact Racquet Center, has run in North Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood since 1996 (some records cite the founding tennis program to 1976), founded by Dr. Ernest Hartzog to close gaps in recreation access for underserved families. Its three-court indoor facility, formerly the St. Johns Racquet Center, runs tennis and pickleball on a low-cost, non-membership model, with court rentals, group lessons, drill clinics, private instruction, and open play mixers, including a 55-plus session, all priced on a sliding scale so cost is never a barrier. PT&E also hosts the Queer Pickleball League and QTBIPOC Pickleball Mixers, alongside competitive round robins and daily skill sessions. Every dollar from paid programming funds the nonprofit’s core mission: tuition-free after-school and summer programs that have supported more than 18,000 K-12 youth with academics, mental health resources, and family engagement alongside racquet instruction. It holds a 4.7 rating across 40 Google reviews.

One of my team members recommended this place to play pickleball for our annual team retreat. The pricing was great, and we had such an amazing time. I love that there were several courts available. I highly recommend this place for tennis, pickleball, or badminton.
Great place to play tennis! The court fees go directly to their after school program. I’ve been told every student that’s ever been in their program has graduated high school. I’m a retired teacher who taught for a while in St John’s. That a statistic to be very proud of! What a great use of my tennis court fees!
I love how all money used for booking courts goes directly back into the PT&E's after-school program for academic support, life lessons, and on-court instruction.
I’ve been attending the Monday night 2.5-3.5 Rec night and having a blast. The clinics are extremely well run and give you an intense cardio workout. The coaches are young, knowledgeable, and very friendly- they somehow get to know everyone’s names within each session. The other attendees have been friendly, within their 20s-40s, and appropriately within the 2.5-3.5 level. It’s a great place to learn and grow and work on technique or game play.
St. Johns Racquet Center is a great facility if you are looking for a place to play or learn tennis. The front desk staffs are friendly and the coaching staffs are all fantastic players. If I ever have children, I would definitely bring them here.
