Does Caffeine Help Pickleball Performance?

It concluded that a performance-enhancing effect is likely for muscle endurance, muscle strength, anaerobic power, and aerobic endurance, supported by moderate-quality evidence.

The size of the effect is worth seeing plainly. For muscle endurance, the analyses reported effect sizes of about 0.28 to 0.38, which is small. Caffeine is not transformative here. It is a modest edge.

Does that research apply to pickleball players?

This is the honest gap, and it is a large one.

The umbrella review’s conclusion was framed specifically around young male athletes. Pickleball’s recreational population looks nothing like that sample. In one study of match physiology, the 15 participants had an average age of 65.2 years, and doubles play averaged 4.1 METs, which is moderate intensity rather than the maximal testing most caffeine studies use.

So the fair statement is that caffeine has been shown to help in exercise tests conducted mostly on younger male athletes, and that its effect on a doubles game among middle-aged and older recreational players has not been directly established. The research is limited and does not cover this specific case.

Why does caffeine affect people so differently?

Because metabolism, habit, and genetics all vary, and researchers have not fully untangled them.

The most studied genetic angle involves CYP1A2, a gene affecting how quickly caffeine is metabolized, splitting people loosely into faster and slower metabolizers. Some studies have found the ergogenic response differs by genotype, with one meta-analysis reporting improvement in cycling time trials only among carriers of one variant. Other studies found no such modifying effect, and some found effects pointing in different directions.

ADORA2A, a gene affecting adenosine receptors, has also been examined. The overall picture remains inconsistent. Habitual intake and simple tolerance matter too. Some people feel jittery and unfocused where others feel sharp, and no article can tell you which one you are.

What are the real downsides worth knowing?

Two come up repeatedly and both deserve to be named.

  1. Sleep disruption, which is better documented than most people realize. In a study of 12 healthy sleepers, a moderate dose taken six hours before bed reduced objectively measured total sleep time from 7.68 hours to 6.50 hours, a loss of over an hour. Notably, at the six hour mark the participants’ own sleep diaries did not register the disruption, only the objective measurement did.   2. Heart rhythm sensitivity, where the evidence is more nuanced than the folklore. Despite a long-standing assumption that caffeine triggers arrhythmias, recent observational studies have generally not found higher arrhythmia risk among coffee drinkers, and one randomized trial testing multiple suspected triggers of atrial fibrillation found only alcohol consistently associated with more episodes. That said, individual sensitivity is real, and anyone with a diagnosed heart rhythm condition should be guided by their cardiologist rather than by population averages.

Evening play makes the first point concrete. A late match plus a pre-game coffee quietly costs sleep, and sleep affects how you play tomorrow more reliably than caffeine improves how you play today. My own experience is that caffeine before evening open play made me feel better for an hour and worse the whole next morning. Not a study, but it matches what the sleep data would predict.
